State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were injured, in what officials called a targeted attack.

Melissa Hortman’s power as a Democratic leader to shape the course of a deeply divided Minnesota Legislature was a far cry from her job as a teenager making chili-cheese burritos and overshadowed her volunteer work training service dogs for veterans.

In response, the Minnesota Vikings, the state’s NFL team, issued a statement condemning the assaults on the lawmakers. Hortman, 55, had collaborated with the team for more than a decade during her time in the House of Representatives, where she had served since 2005. She became Speaker in 2019.

Vance Boelter, the man accused of shooting two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses, was captured late Sunday in Sibley County after a sprawling two-day manhunt.

The Hortmans, the Hoffmans and other top Democrats had gathered at a downtown Minneapolis hotel Friday night for their party's annual Humphrey-Mondale dinner. It's named for two Minnesota liberal icons who served both as US senators and vice presidents, Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale.
