Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has confirmed that its The Eternaut series used generative AI instead of traditional VFX to cut costs. The Argentinian sci-fi series used the technology to visualise a falling building in Buenos Aires, which it claims was both cheaper and ten times faster than traditional VFX.

Netflix used generative AI to create a scene in the sci-fi series The Eternaut — a first for one of the streamer’s original shows or films. During an earnings call on Thursday, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the use of AI was faster than using traditional visual effects tools and helped cut costs.

"That sequence actually is the very first [generative] AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film. So the creators were thrilled with the result," said Mr Sarandos. AI was among the key concerns raised during a Hollywood strike in 2023.
