The National Hurricane Center said late Wednesday, July 30, Tropical Storm Gil has formed in the Pacific Ocean and could soon become a hurricane.

Tropical Storm Iona continued racing west across the Central Pacific early today while Tropical Storm Gil strengthened far to the east, with both systems posing no threat to Hawaii, forecasters said.

Tropical Storm Gil strengthened into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday but was not expected to threaten land, forecasters said. The Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 1,
