Myanmar, also known as Burma, will hold a phased general election starting later this month. It comes amidst a years long civil war that has killed thousands and displaced millions. And it is being called by a military government that seized power in a coup four years ago.
More than £1m of taxpayers' money was spent on Guernsey's last general election, according to officials. The island's government said the poll in June cost £1.15m, including £200,000 on vote-counting machines, £500,000 on staffing, £200,000 on advertising and events, and £100,000 on candidate manifestos and postage.
