The True and Traumatic Origins of Festivus, the ‘Seinfeld’-Popularized Christmas Alternative
Dec. 23 has been deemed Festivus after it was written into 'Seinfeld' nearly 30 years ago. That episode's writer tells The Hollywood Reporter about his father and how his invented holiday originated.
Festivus is a fictional holiday created on the sitcom "Seinfeld" as a secular, anti-consumerist response to Christmas. Known for the catchphrase "Festivus for the rest of us," it takes place on Dec. 23 and offers a festive reprieve for those disillusioned by the religious or materialistic aspects of a modern American Christmas.
You might know Festivus, the quirky secular holiday, from its feature in the 1997 "Seinfeld" episode, "The Strike." In it, George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander, talks about the ridiculous, anti-Christmas holiday his father, Frank Costanza, made up when he was a kid.
Jerry Seinfeld discussed his clean comedy approach on the "We Might Be Drunk" podcast, explaining how avoiding profanity forces him to be more elegant with words.
“It is with profound sadness and grief that the Finn family announces the passing of beloved comedic actor, Pat Finn. In 2022, Pat battled bladder cancer, went into remission, but the cancer returned and metastasized,” a family statement said. “He was a warrior in every sense of the word.”
Jerry Seinfeld remembers 'Seinfeld' champion Rob Reiner after "Impossibly Sad" death: "Our Show Would Have Never Happened Without Him."
