The baby elephant has spent the past few weeks bonding with her mother, Rose-Tu, and meeting the rest of the herd at the Oregon Zoo.

The Oregon Zoo’s newest baby elephant arrived over the weekend. At 4:29 p.m. Saturday, Rose-Tu gave birth to a calf that appeared to be a healthy girl, weighing in the vicinity of 200 pounds.

The young Asian elephant calf, born at the Oregon Zoo on Feb. 1, will henceforth be known as Tula-Tu, a name chosen by care staff to reflect both her individual character and significance to the herd.

That year, attendance tripled. A baby boom followed. Portland's zoo produced 27 elephant calves from the 1960s to the 1990s, more than any other North American zoo.
