Officials urge Americans to stay indoors as historic winter storm creates "catastrophic" ice conditions and triggers the largest weather alert ever.

The U.S. workweek opened with yet more snow dumping on the Northeast under the tail end of a colossal winter storm that brought ice and power outages, impassable roads, canceled flights and frigid cold to much of the southern and eastern United States.

The storm deaths were reported in New York, Tennessee, Louisiana, Kansas, Texas, Massachusetts, Arkansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Kentucky and New Jersey, and other deaths were under investigation.
