The authorities said there were no initial reports of damage from the quake, which struck in the hills west of Malibu.
Southern California experienced 15 seismic sequences with at least one magnitude 4 or higher earthquake — the highest total in 65 years.
A magnitude 2.5 earthquake was reported Sunday afternoon at 1:04 p.m. Pacific time less than a mile from Malibu, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred four miles from Westlake Village, four miles from Thousand Oaks, seven miles from Agoura Hills and nine miles from Camarillo.
