A new area code will overlay the entire 317 region that includes Indianapolis and most of its suburbs. Beginning in mid-November, newly assigned telephone numbers may have a 463 area code.

But that idea isn't a new one. IURC already applied an all-services overlay proposal to the 812 area code earlier this year, and the group already established a southern Indiana plan to focus on 317.
