In an announcement that many investors knew was coming but didn’t believe would actually happen, famed investor Warren Buffett said Saturday at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting that he would step down as CEO at the end of the year.

Buffett, one of the world’s richest people and most accomplished investors, took control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965 when it was a textiles manufacturer. He turned the company into a conglomerate by finding other businesses and stocks to buy that were selling for less than they were worth.

Since 1965, Buffett delivered a staggering 5,502,284% return with a 19.9% CAGR, beating the S&P 500 in 20 of the last 30 years. His best year? A 102% return in 1979. His worst? -31.8% in 2008.
