💞 360 Degrees of BROCH! 💞 Love this scan of Mousa Broch by Steve Colmer (@steve_studio on Instagram) of Lateral North. The recipient of the "Official Best Broch in the World 2020" award after our epic #WorlfCupOfBrochs Tournament, Mousa is the best-preserved Broch in Scotland. Here's the key takeaway facts: 📏 Mousa stands at 44 feet high, making it the tallest Broch in Scotland. 👴 It is thought to have been built around 100 BC, over 2,000 years ago! 🧱 It has a tiny internal diameter at 6m,

Caithness Broch Project this had me shouting at the TV haha. Mrs Soup and I were talking about southern English pronunciation range today and I always applaud an attempt, 'Llangollen' yn Gymraeg, for example. But it shouldn't hurt!? The ol' "You need something in your throat" comment is an unfortunate misunderstanding of other ways of using your voice. | Archaeosoup

Listen 👂 Hear the OrkneyInga saga being read aloud in Ousdale Broch in old Norse, the language of the Norsemen. Probably for the first time in centuries! Tom reads one of the final passages of the saga that recounts the tale of William the Lion, King of Scotland, marching north to Ousdale in the year 1201. According to the Orkneyinga Saga, Ousdale - known as Eysteinsdal by the Norse - was the scene of a confrontation between William the Lion, King of Scotland, and Harald the Elder (the 'Wicked

In the event of an apocalypse, this is how to make an Iron Age comb from deer antler! Just in case, but then you won't be able to watch this video either!!! So watch carefully Antler and bone were the plastic of the Iron Age, we find many day to day items made from antler from pins, to combs and even gaming peices. Antler provides an extremely hard waring material that's good for small durable objects that are subject to pressures that might snap other materials like wood or stone. | Caithness B

---THE FOURTH WONDER of WATTEN--- The fourth site takes us out of the Iron Age and into the medieval era. There is a bit of a gap in Caithness archaeology, although the Iron Age is prominent on the landscape with all the brochs there's not much in the way of viking/Norse archaeology around. We would have liked to have illustrated that period in Wattens past, (since Watten takes its name from the Norse word for water) but we had to make do with a chapel instead. In 1726, the chapel is described a

Between Golspie and Brora is Carn Liath or “the Grey Cairn”. This broch occupies a terrace overlooking the shore, has walls that are still 12ft high in places, and comes complete with a well preserved entrance passage and lintelled doorway. The remains of the broch are still impressive. The interior is deeper than the exterior, which remains partially banked. In the entrance passage is a cavity that was possibly used to guard the broch. And on the opposite side of the broch from the entrance is

Caithness Broch Project on Instagram: "😵💫 POV you're trying to get your mate out of a fairy rave at Bruan Broch 😵💫 (Cont from pt.1) The young lad returned the next day to try and retrieve his friend from the fairy hoolie. To his amazement, however, the door, and all signs of the party, had disappeared! He had heard the old wives' tales about the fairy-folks ceilidhs, though: that the same scene would be enacted exactly a year later, and that fairies were powerless against Iron or steel. Re
