In honor of #NationalNameYourselfDay, we wanted to share this male sage grouse strutting on his lek, or breeding ground, in northeastern Utah. Now, if you've ever heard a sage grouse strutting during the breeding season, you'll know this isn't the typical sound you hear from a distance. Displaying males lunge forward to push air in and out of the yellow air sacs in their chest, making a quiet gurgling or burping sound. We think the name "sage grunt" seems more appropriate! *Turn the volume up! |
