In a November 1942 engagement, the USS Massachusetts BB-59 decisively defeated the incomplete French battleship Jean Bart. The Massachusetts, fully operational with radar-directed 16-inch guns, landed several hits on the Jean Bart, disabling its single operational main turret despite some shells not detonating. The Massachusetts then neutralized other French defenses while the Jean Bart remained out of action until being finished off by aerial bombs from the USS Ranger. Battle details Initial en
