We are pleased to announce that 22-year-old, Western lowland gorilla Kumbuka has given birth to a healthy infant! The 4.8-pound female was born on Friday, September 28th at 1:30 pm. Kumbuka’s initial maternal behavior toward the baby was perfect and normal. Unfortunately, Kumbuka was cradling and carrying her youngster improperly and the extremely difficult decision was made to remove Kumbuka’s baby for short-term assisted rearing by gorilla care staff. Five-year-old Angela, the Western lowland gorilla, is growing up and working up an appetite! In this clip, she enjoys a nutritious diet of cucumbers and bell peppers, provided by her animal care team, then shows off her playful side as she scurries through the Campo Gorilla Reserve.
