In 2005, a prehistoric snout encased in calcareous concretion was spotted in a cliff overlooking Alberta’s Oldman River. After a challenging extraction, the mostly intact skull—the one depicted on this coin—proved to be a significant discovery: its unusual mix of features, such as the set of horns and an elaborate frill, led paleontologists at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology to determine that the skull belonged to a new species of horned dinosaurs, and that ceratopsians were more divers

Check out this cool fossil concretion with me. Concretions are formed where organic matter gets buried in sediment and the minerals from the thing harden the rock around it concentrically! An now you know! There could be remnants of a fossil in there! #fossil #fossilhunter #fossils | Rock Your World: Rock Shop, Jewelry Studio, Online Boutique & Guided Tours

We came across a fresh shale landslide! 🏝️ Amongst it, we found these fossils! 😍 These 185 Million Year Old Jurassic specimens were so exciting to find, we are so pleased with them! 🌅 We also found an unusual calcified Belemnite (Squid-like creature) which we were lucky enough to find! 😍🦑 These specimens are normally preserved with a dull grey appearance, however this example has multiple layers of brown calcite. This is something we’ve only seen a handful of times from this area 🏝🌊 These

Rocks for the Spirit on Instagram: "Ammonite Fossil Extraction🐚🌈 These beautiful Ammonite fossils are found in southern Alberta, Canada, where they’ve been preserved in shale for over 70 million years. Ammonites were squid-like creatures that lived in coiled shells, and this specimen comes from the Bearpaw Formation, a geological site known for producing some of the most well-preserved Ammonites in the world. Many of these fossils reveal a vivid layer of Ammolite, an iridescent m

After nearly a year of digging, Paleontologists near Grande Prairie, Alta., have pulled a 272-kilogram pachyrhinosaurus skull from the ground. The team from the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum named the specimen “Big Sam” and noted that it’s uniquely preserved because it was found upside down, indicating the dinosaur was lying on its back when it died. Before extracting the skull, museum curator Emily Bamforth joined CBC’s Radio Active to share her excitement for the discovery. #Alberta #dinosa
