The ǂNūkhoen (Damara people) gathered on the eve of Genocide Remembrance Day for a vigil and to light a fire honouring their ancestors who died during the genocide. Although the extermination order targeted only the Nama and Ovaherero, it is recorded that the San and Damara were also heavily affected during the 1904–1908 genocide. Abner Xoagub, the secretary general of the Damara Kings Council, noted that although not officially recorded, the mass killing of the ǂNūkhoen began as early as the 13
