The first Blantyre mining disaster took place in October 1877. It remains Scotland's worst mining accident, 207 miners were killed leaving behind 92 widows and 250 fatherless children. The likely cause of the disaster was the explosion of firedamp gas, also thought to be responsible for the subsequent 1878 & 1879 Blantyre mine disasters.
